Altonin Tablet PR

Altonin Tablet PR can be taken with or without food. Take it at the same time each day to get the most benefit. You should continue taking the medicine and complete the dose even if your symptoms improve. If you stop taking it too early, the infection may return or worsen.

Using this medicine may cause some common side effects such as headaches, nausea, and flatulence in some people. These side effects are usually temporary and go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if these side effects bother you or do not go away.

Before starting treatment with this medicine, you should tell your doctor if you have any problems with your heart, liver, or kidneys. You should also let your doctor know all the other medicines you are taking. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctors before using the medicine.

Bacterial infections of urinary tract

Altonin Tablet PR is a combination of two medicines. Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic. It works by killing the bacteria in the urine that causes infection. Cranberry Extract is an extract from cranberry fruit. It prevents the bacteria from connecting to the other bacteria to form a biofilm (colony) in the urinary tract (urine pipe), thus hampers the growth and multiplication of the bacteria. This is how it works to treat urinary tract infection.

Take it with food to avoid nausea, which is a common side effect.

Cranberry should be used with caution in patients with kidney stones as cranberry contains a moderate amount of oxalate.

Altonin Tablet PR can turn your urine a yellow/brown colour. This is normal and nothing to worry about.

If you are taking any contraceptive ‘pill’ at the same time as Altonin Tablet PR, the effectiveness of the ‘pill’ can be reduced if you have a bout of being sick (vomiting) which lasts for more than 24 hours. In such a case, ask your doctor for additional contraceptive measures.

Altonin Tablet PR can reduce the effectiveness of oral typhoid vaccine. If you are due to have any vaccinations, make sure the person treating you knows that you are taking this medicine.

In Bacterial infections of urinary tract

Altonin Tablet PR is an antibiotic that is used to treat or prevent urinary tract infections. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. Altonin Tablet PR may turn pee dark yellow or brown. This is quite common and will return to normal color after you finish taking the medicine. This medicine usually makes you feel better quite quickly. However, you should continue taking it as long as it is prescribed even when you feel better. This will ensure that the infection is completely cleared and prevent it from returning.
