Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup is an antibiotic medicine with versatile actions. It can treat a multitude of bacterial infections including those of the ears, eyes, nose, sinus, tonsils, tooth, throat, lungs, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and urinary tract. It may also be effective against peptic ulcer disease.
Basic Info
Description
Give Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup either with or without food but it is best to give it with food if it upsets your child’s stomach. It is generally given two to three times a day. Stick to the dose, time, and way prescribed by the doctor as these depend on the severity of the infection, its type, and your child’s body weight and age. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of taking the medicine, repeat the dose when your child feels better. However, do not double the dose if it is the time for the next dose.
Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup can cause some minor and temporary side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and mild skin rash. These side effects should ideally subside on their own. But, in case these side effects persist or become bothersome for your child, report to the doctor without a delay.
Tell your child’s doctor if your child has had any previous episode of allergy, heart problem, blood disorder, birth defects, airway obstruction, lung anomaly, gastrointestinal problem, skin disorder, and kidney malfunction. Knowledge of your child’s medical history will help the doctor make dose alterations and plan your child’s overall treatment.

MOA
Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup is an antibiotic. It works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering (cell wall) which is essential for the survival of the bacteria. By doing so, this medicine kills the infection-causing bacteria and prevents the infection from spreading without making them resistant to further treatment.
What If
Unless your childโs doctor has advised a specific regime for your child, you can give the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if itโs almost time for the next dose. Do not give a double dose to catch up and follow the prescribed dosing schedule.
Drug Tips
Complete the entire course of antibiotics without stopping the medicine in between. Doing so may cause the bacteria to multiply again, become resistant, or cause another infection.
Make sure your child drinks plenty of water if they develop diarrhea as a side effect.
Conditions like common cold and flu are caused by viruses. Never use this medicine for such conditions.
Give Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup to your child only for their current infection. Avoid storing the medicine for future use as it is impossible to judge whether the same medicine would work for any future illnesses.
Stop this medicine and immediately report to your childโs doctor in case your child develops an itchy rash, facial swelling, or breathing difficulties while taking this medicine.
Faqs
Q. Can I give Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup to my child repeatedly for a long time?
Giving your child Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup for a long term can cause fungal infection (oral thrush) in the mouth and severe gastrointestinal infections (superinfections). Therefore, do not alter the dose and duration on your own and give Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup to your child exactly as prescribed. Additionally, irregular treatment, repeated use, and misuse of Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup can make the bacteria resistant.
Q. Are there any possible serious side effects of Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup?
Although rare, Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup may cause some serious side effects such as persistent vomiting, kidney damage, allergy, diarrhea, and severe gastrointestinal infections. Always consult your childโs doctor for help in such a situation.
Q. Can other medicines be given at the same time as Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup?
Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup can sometimes interact with other medicines or substances. Tell your doctor about any other medicines your child is taking before starting Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup. Also, check with your childโs doctor before giving any medicine to your child.
Q. Can I get my child vaccinated while on treatment with Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup?
Antibiotics usually do not interfere with the ingredients in vaccines or cause a bad reaction in a child who has just been vaccinated. However, children taking antibiotics should not get vaccinated until they recover from the illness. As soon as your child feels better, the vaccine can be given.
Q. The mucus coming out of my childโs nose is yellow-green. Is it a sign of a bacterial infection?
In the common cold, the mucus changes its color and thickens up with time, but this does not mean that your child needs antibiotics. Common cold symptoms often last for 7-10 days. In case they fail to clear up within this duration, reach out to your childโs doctor for guidance.
Q. Is Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup safe for children suffering from infectious mononucleosis?
No, do not give this medicine to your child in this case as a high percentage of children with infectious mononucleosis develop a skin rash (erythematous rash) while taking Amoxycillin 125mg Syrup.
