Atrosine Eye Drop

Atrosine Eye Drop is a medicine given to treat eye problems such as myopia where a child can see nearby objects clearly but has problems seeing distant objects.

Atrosine Eye Drop should preferably be only used in the eye that is experiencing problems. The dose and duration depend upon the type and severity of the disease condition. So, stick to the dose, time, and way prescribed by the doctor.

Always wash the hands thoroughly with soap and hot water before and after using Atrosine Eye Drop. Doing so will help avoid the risk of any infection. For instilling the medicine, ask your child to lie down and look up and to the other side. Make sure your child remains still and calm while you are putting the medicine. Put the medicine drops in the lower eyelid, directed away from the nose. After this, ask your child to keep their eyes closed for some time so that the medicine doesn’t spill out and gets absorbed properly.

Abstain your child from rubbing their eyes soon after putting the medicine as it can lead to redness or irritation. Your child should not wear any sort of contact lenses while on treatment with Atrosine Eye Drop as this medicine can damage the lenses.  Do not abruptly stop the medicine by yourself, even if your child starts to feel better. Continue the medicine until the prescribed course is complete. Consult your child’s doctor in case of any confusion.

This medicine may have some minor and temporary side effects such as blurry vision, photophobia, dreased tear production, eye irritation, and stinging in the eyes. These episodes should start receding after a few doses. However, if these side effects persist or become bothersome for your child, report to the doctor without any delay.

Narrate your child’s complete medical history to your child’s doctor, including any previous episode of allergy, heart problems, blood disorders, birth defects, airway obstruction, lung anomaly, gastrointestinal problems, skin disorders, liver impairment, and kidney malfunction. This information is critical for dose alterations and for planning your child’s overall treatment.

Treatment of Myopia

This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.

Myopia in children commonly occurs due to a problem in their focus mechanism. Atrosine Eye Drop belongs to a class of medicines called anticholinergic drugs. It works by relaxing particularly those eye muscles which enable the eyes to focus on distant objects.

Q: What if you forget to take Atrosine Ophthalmic Solution?
A: Unless your child’s doctor has advised a specific regime for your child, you can give the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not give the double dose to catch up and follow the prescribed dosing schedule.

Use the eye drops only in the problematic eye unless your child’s doctor has suggested otherwise.

Once opened, do not keep Atrosine Eye Drop for more than 28 days at home. Discard the leftover medicine.

To avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, including the eyes, eyelids, or eyelashes.

If your child is using more than one eye medicine, maintain a gap of few minutes between the two different medications.

Adhere to the number of drops as suggested by your child’s doctor. Do not use more or less.

Go for your child’s regular eye check-ups before and during the treatment.

Only give Atrosine Eye Drop to your child for their current problem. Never save medicine for future illnesses.

Q. What is the best time to use Atrosine Eye Drop?

Atrosine Eye Drop can be given at any time of the day as prescribed by the doctor. However, it is best to use it just before your child retires to bed since Atrosine Eye Drop can cause temporary blurring of vision.

Q. My child is 10 years old and has blurred vision (myopia). Is Atrosine Eye Drop the right choice?

Atrosine Eye Drop is usually given to young children to prevent the progression of myopia. In older children, where myopia has already been progressed, Atrosine Eye Drop is not known to have any beneficial effect. Therefore, in this case, avoid giving Atrosine Eye Drop to your child and consult your child’s doctor.

Q. What if I give too much of Atrosine Eye Drop by mistake?

Excessive use of Atrosine Eye Drop in children can cause anticholinergic effects (dry mouth), cardiovascular changes (fast heart rate, irregular heartbeat), and central nervous system effects (confusion, restlessness, hallucinations, convulsions). Therefore, it is advised not to give more than the recommended dose.

Q. Can other medicines be given at the same time as Atrosine Eye Drop?

Atrosine Eye Drop may interact with other medicines or eye drops. Check with your child’s doctor before giving any medicine to your child along with Atrosine Eye Drop.

Q. How to store Atrosine Eye Drop at home?

Atrosine Eye Drop is for external use only and should be stored out of the sight and reach of children. Keep Atrosine Eye Drop upright at room temperature in a dry place away from light.

Myopia or nearsightedness is an eye disorder in which your child may have difficulty seeing distant objects but can see objects that are near clearly.
