Topivar 25mg Tablet is a medicine used to treat epilepsy (seizures) and to prevent migraines. It is also used in the treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a rare, but severe form of epilepsy that starts in early childhood).

Topivar 25mg Tablet may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time, each day. If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember it and finish the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stopping the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor may cause an increased frequency of seizures. Your doctor may advise regular monitoring of serum bicarbonate levels while you are taking this medicine.

Some of the common side effects of this medicine include nausea, taste change, fatigue, diarrhea, weight loss, loss of appetite, and memory impairment. It may also cause vision problems like myopia or glaucoma, so it is important to get your eyesight checked before you start the treatment and regularly thereafter. You may experience dizziness and sleepiness, so do not drive or do anything that requires mental focus until you know how this medicine affects you. Serious side effects of Topivar 25mg Tablet are rare. The serious effects of Topivar 25mg Tablet may include glaucoma (difficulty in seeing, eye pain, and blurred vision), kidney stones (sharp pain in your sides or lower back), and metabolic acidosis (tiredness, loss of appetite, irregular and faint heartbeat). Other serious side effects of Topivar 25mg Tablet could be suicidal thoughts and insufficient sweating (some children taking Topivar 25mg Tablet may not sweat enough in hot weather, causing their body temperatures to rise).

Q. I am taking valproic acid for fits. Will Topivar 25mg Tablet interfere with the working of valproic acid? Can this combination be taken?

Topivar 25mg Tablet does not interfere with the working of valproic acid, but it increases the risk of getting excess levels of ammonia in the blood (hyperammonemia). Increased levels of ammonia in the blood can be dangerous and may cause difficulty in thinking, remembering information, or solving problems. It may also decrease your alertness and make you feel very sleepy with low energy. Immediately inform your doctor if you notice these symptoms. It is important to know that, in rare cases, Topivar 25mg Tablet alone can cause hyperammonemia.

Q. Can Topivar 25mg Tablet be used in children?

Yes, Topivar 25mg Tablet is used for seizures in children more than 2 years of age. However, because of the lack of any reports, this medicine is not recommended to be used in children for migraines.

Q. Since I have started using Topivar 25mg Tablet people are saying that I have lost weight. Is it because of Topivar 25mg Tablet or something else for which I should get investigated?

It could be due to Topivar 25mg Tablet because Topivar 25mg Tablet commonly causes weight loss probably due to a decrease in appetite. If you still have any doubts, talk to your doctor who will advise you appropriately.
